play.acast.com/s/two-lucky-bds/theoppositeofeaster After another short and unforeseen break, Lance and Sande return for Episode 8, released on April 30th, 2021 (run time 1h 3m 1s). In this episode Sande and Lance are joined by the author of Tree of Strangers, the amazing Barbara Sumner. Spring-boarding off of Chapter 8 of her book, Sande, Lance and Barbara initially delve into the issue of secondary loss. As Barbara mentions in her book, "adoption is created through loss; without loss, there would be no adoption" (p61). For many adopted persons loss is a central theme in their lives. Sadly loss is a feature of many adoption reunion stories as well. While Barbara's experience of secondary loss is incredibly unique, they make comparisons to the losses that other adoptive persons can experience through reunion. Together Lance, Sande and Barbara also talk about Barbara's lengthy battles to gain access to her original birth and adoption records, and the awful lies that she uncovers when she eventually gains access to some of them. She tells of how she finds hand written notes on her files, written by social workers, explaining how they have tried to deny her access to her records. The episode ends with Barbara talking about the evidence that she presented to the The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care currently taking place in Aotearoa/New Zealand www.abuseincare.org.nz/ Barbara evidence can be seen here: www.youtube.com/watch?fbclid=IwAR2Yf8BEO074E-am9Vl2s_2LEFtb0mjpn153FJA2NNpgr9SJXet8yjUSPRM&v=m_BjRF3seEs&feature=youtu.be On the Royal Commission website you can also find other adoption testimony, including evidence given by Dr Anne Else, author of the wonderful book A Question of Adoption.
