Listen Here: play.acast.com/s/two-lucky-bds/infertility-infanticide-buildingafamily Episode five of Two Lucky B*#%*@ds was released on December 13th, 2020 (run time 49.26). In this episode Lance and Sande consider some of the themes that emerged for them from the fifth chapter of Barbara Sumner's wonderful book Tree of Strangers - infertility, infanticide, and building a family. The discussion goes deep and wide. In the first part of the episode Sande considers the place of unconscious memory and what the body remembers and stores as a result of trauma. Lance shares his experiences of visiting hospitals and the link that he believes exists to memories of fear as an infant separated at birth. Lance refers to the science around this, as outlined in The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment by Babette Rothschild. www.bookdepository.com/Body-Remembers-Babette-Rothschild/9780393703276?ref=grid-view&qid=1607844439797&sr=1-1 or The Body Keeps the Score : Mind, Brain and Body in the Transformation of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk www.bookdepository.com/The-Body-Keeps-the-Score/9780141978611 The discussion then turned to infertility and the way that babies from young unwed mothers became a solution to the problem facing large numbers of couples during the baby scoop era. Lance referred to the reasons for high rates of fertility in the post-war years, and the growing rates of infertility again today. He mentioned that many western countries now have fertility rates that are below that necessary to replace those who are dying. This was drawn from a recent UN Report: www.un.org/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/files/documents/2020/Aug/un_2020_worldfertilityfamilyplanning_highlights.pdf and also from other recent journal articles: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2849155/ Mention was also made of the rise of male infertility: www.chatelaine.com/health/male-infertility-rising/ This then led to practices during the baby scoop era and those being raised through the Royal Commission into Abuse in Care: www.abuseincare.org.nz/ One such case was recently reported in a New Zealand Herald Article Abuse in Care: Babies 'abducted' from young, solo mothers by Anglican Church service, www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/abuse-in-care-babies-abducted-from-young-solo-mothers-by-anglican-church-service/227B3DJOV6QZZVBOWURPKHU5ZI/ From here the conversation went slightly off track when Lance and Sande discussed baby farming practices in New Zealand and abroad. Lance mention a couple of podcasts which focus on two baby farmer cases, that of New Zealander Minnie Dean, and the American baby farmer Georgia Tann whose methods were on the industrial scale and whose corrupt links with legislators helped to shape much of the adoption legislation of the 20th Century. To learn more about these two cases check out these resources: Georgia Tann For more on Georgia Tann you can listen to this (rather macabre) podcast from the Behind the Bastards series: Part One www.iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-the-bastards-29236323/episode/part-one-the-woman-who-invented-30906006/ and Part Two www.iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-the-bastards-29236323/episode/part-two-the-woman-who-invented-30972239/ Or this book by Barbara Bisantz Raymond: www.amazon.com/Baby-Thief-Georgia-Corrupted-Adoption/dp/1402758634 Minnie Dean For more on Minnie Dean you can listen to this podcast from the Black Sheep series by radio New Zealand: www.rnz.co.nz/programmes/black-sheep/story/2018761597/baby-farmer-the-story-of-minnie-dean Or this great book by Lynley Hood: library.shop.otago.ac.nz/publications/minnie-dean-her-life-and-crimes.html |
