I freely admit that this is a fairly controversial meme. When we were adopted in the 1950s and 1960s in Aotearoa/New Zealand there was no financial component to the adoption process (other than lawyers fees). The average cost of adoption in New Zealand today is between $10,000-$25,000, and whereas families who choose surrogacy (often called 'rent-a-womb babies') the fees/costs can range between $15,000-$100,000. Both are further examples of the commoditisation of children through these processes.
